Willie Wagtails’ close shave
Yesterday my grandson and I were watching a little Willie Wagtail darting and flitting around catching midges on the lawn. This morning seemed to be colder than of late so I decided to light the log burner to warm up the house. Just as I was about to fill the barrow with logs I noticed one of the Wagtails with a grub in its beak sitting near to the box of logs.
I stood still and watched for a while. It disappeared in amongst the logs. Having waited until the adult bird went foraging again, I carefully looked into the pile of logs to find a snug little nest full of mini Wagtails; I don’t know how many because I didn’t want to disturb them. If I hadn’t spotted the adult, it could have been disastrous for this couple of Pied Wagtails who have probably travelled a long way to nest here!
