Heritage Open Days
If you’re planning a day out over the weekend but are stuck for ideas of where to go, may we point you in the direction of the Heritage Open Days?
Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest heritage festival, celebrating the country’s fantastic history, architecture and culture, offering people the chance to discover hidden gems and try out new experiences for free. The event takes place over four days every September and it just happens to be over this weekend.
So wherever you are in England (apologies to the rest of the United Kingdom!), there’s bound to be something for you.
There’s loads going on in our area of East Yorkshire so we’ve picked just a handful of our favourites…
The museum was once the gatehouse to Bridlington Priory but has since been a court, a school and even a prison! Today the Bayle is Grade 1 listed and a specified Ancient Monument, which makes it a fascinating place to visit both historically and architecturally. The museum includes life size figures, interactive games and fun for the whole family. No booking required.
If you’ve ever fancied treading the boards, this open day at Hull Truck Theatre is bound to appeal. The theatre’s doors will be opened to the public for a day of activities and events for all the family. Pre-booking required.
Southburn Archaeological Museum
This is your chance to see the reconstruction of the grave of an Iron Age warrior, excavated near Kirkburn. Find out about the Parisi tribe who lived in East Yorkshire over 2000 years ago and discover how a farm worker’s finds tell the story of 6000 years of human occupation in Southburn. No booking required.
To find out about all these open days and more events happening around the country, see the Heritage Open Days website.
