Father’s Day facts and figures
With Father’s Day coming up and dads across the land preparing to be well and truly spoiled, we thought we’d look into this annual paternal appreciation and dig out some interesting facts and figures…
- Fathers’ Day in the UK, like many countries worldwide, takes place on the third Sunday of June, although some Catholic countries celebrate it on 19th March, the feast of St Joseph.
- The celebration is believed to have been started by American Sonora Dodd in 1910 after she’d listened to a Mothers’ Day sermon and wondered why fathers didn’t have their own day of recognition. Dodd and her siblings were raised by their father after their mother died in childbirth.
- The most popular gift on Father’s Day is a tie (although it’s not clear whether it’s popular amongst those buying, or those receiving… ).
- According to greetings card company Hallmark, Fathers’ Day is the 5th largest card-sending holiday in the US calendar.
- If you’re planning on saying it with flowers, roses are the official flower of Fathers’ Day.
- In Thailand, Fathers’ Day is celebrated on the birthday of the reigning King.
- In the UK, approximately 7 million Father’s Day cards will be sent (compared to 13 million on Mother’s Day).
- Us Brits spend approximately £200 million a year on Father’s Day gifts (that’s an awful lot of ties… ).
