10 reasons to be cheerful this Yorkshire Day (if you’re from Yorkshire)
Ey up, it’s Yorkshire Day! So to celebrate, here are 10 reasons why we’re proud to live in God’s Own County.
- Yorkshire featured third in the top 10 regions to visit in the world, yes, the world, in the Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2014 guide.
- Yorkshire’s athletes helped the county clock up more medals in the 2012 London Olympics than entire countries such as South Africa, Spain and even the 2016 hosts, Brazil. Must be all that fresh air and real ale!
- North Yorkshire spa town Harrogate is the happiest place to live in Britain according to a Rightmove survey. Bet they’re even happier now.
- Yorkshire is yummy. With five Michelin Star restaurants in Yorkshire, there are more than any other region in England, outside of London.
- When Yorkshire played host the Tour de France Grand Depart earlier this year, race director Christian Prudhomme described it as the “grandest” in the tour’s 111-year history. Yorkshire folk certainly know how to throw a party.
- Leeds, York and Scarborough are all in the top eight most visited towns and cities in the country (Visit England 2010). So whether you like shopping, history or the seaside, we’ve got that covered.
- Yorkshire contains two World Heritage Sites, two areas of outstanding natural beauty and two national parks. Who said it was grim up north?
- Bradford trumped Los Angeles, Cannes and Venice to achieve UNESCO City of Film status in 2009. And the reason? Cinema was practically invented in Bradford.
- Yorkshire is home to places with names like Thwing, Giggleswick and Boggle Hole, and street names like Whipmawhopmagate and Booty Lane. Need we say more?
- Yorkshire is home to over 80 real ale breweries producing almost a third of the UK’s beer. Now if that doesn’t make you smile, nothing will.
