10 great things to come from Yorkshire (well it is Yorkshire Day!)

Okay, so how long have you got?

It’s no secret that we, at Bannisters’ Farm, are just a little bit proud of our native Yorkshire. So on Yorkshire Day, indulge us if you will, whilst we revel in a very small proportion of Yorkshire’s greatest things…

Sweet things

Name one of your favourite chocolate bars and chances are it originated in Yorkshire. Kit Kats, Aeros, Milkybars, Smarties, Chocolate Oranges all originated in York, even Party Rings and Jelly Babies hail from this great county.

Savoury (and sweet) things

Who hasn’t tried a Yorkshire pudding? The mixture of milk, flour and eggs was first published as a recipe (initially called Dripping Pudding) back in 1737. Served as a starter to dull the appetite before the more expensive main “meat” course was served, Yorkshire puds are synonymous with the traditional Sunday roast but they can also be served as a dessert too, see this Blackberry and Apple Yorkshire Pudding recipe from BBC Good Food.

Fabulous food (in general)

Yorkshire boasts more Michelin-starred restaurants (six in all) than anywhere outside London. A record that is sure to come from the vast array of growers and artisan food and drink producers across the county.

Celestial countryside

Yorkshire has no less than three national parks – the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and part of the Peak District, equating to almost a third of the total area of National Parks in the UK. Then there’s the three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Howardian Hills, Nidderdale and the Forest of Bowland. Last but not least, the Yorkshire Wolds, home of Bannisters’ Farm, is pretty special too!

Wonderful wordsmiths

Whether it’s novels, poems or plays, Yorkshire has produced some of the country’s best-known writers from the Bronte sisters, W.H. Auden and J.B. Priestly to Barbara Taylor Bradford, Ian McMillan and Alan Bennett.

Amazing artists

Often described as the UK’s greatest living artist, David Hockney was born in Bradford, later residing just up the road from Bannisters’ Farm where he painted the Wolds landscape over several years. Barbara Hepworth and sculptor Henry Moore were also born in God’s Own County.

The home of cinema

Although the Lumiere brothers have often been credited with inventing cinema, the first moving images were believed to have been shot by a Frenchman in Leeds. Louis le Prince moved to the city in 1866 to work for a local engineering company. In 1888 he patented a camera with which he filmed some short sequences in the city.

The birthplace of club football (yes, really)

Believe it or not, Sheffield is recognised by both FIFA and UEFA as the birthplace of club football. Sheffield F.C. being the world’s oldest football club. The club was formed in 1857 by two local men who established a set of rules, The Sheffield Rules, upon which the later Football Association Rules were based.

Plain speaking

“I say what I like and I like what I say”, is a well-known Yorkshire phrase but it seems that people like to listen to the Yorkshire accent too.  One recent YouGov poll assessing the attractiveness of accents in the UK ranked the Yorkshire accent as fourth most attractive, whereas Yorkshire topped a poll, beating Received Pronunciation (RP), as the most intelligent-sounding accent. So much for being “strong in the arm, thick in the head…”.

5,390,576 people

Yes, that’s the population of Yorkshire, the biggest and, some would argue best, county in the UK. And what makes Yorkshire so great? It’s people. So people of Yorkshire, we salute you!
